HUBBARD FAMILY BELL TOWER
TALLADEGA COUNTY, ALABAMA
Perched on the crest of a hill overlooking rolling forests and farm land that has been in the Hubbard family for generations, lies a small, private cemetery behind an ornamental fence. An unassuming metal arch emblazoned with the family name was all that previously marked the entrance The desire of the family was to construct a monument that would serve to prominently mark the entrance to the cemetery as well as provide a bell that could be tolled to announce the burial of a family member.
The tower was designed to reflect the rural, wooded surroundings of the cemetery and to provide a sense of timelessness and permanence. Local quarried stone and cedar form the basis of the materials incorporated in the construction. Slate shingles and copper trim -- including an ornate finial -- add character and warmth to the design.
